Password Change, Virus Alert    11/22/2005

  • VIRUS ALERT - Please make sure that your virus definitions are up-to-date on your anti-virus software. A new variant of the w32/sober virus has infected many PPAR Members. This virus replicates itself via email and it "spoofs" the sender of the message. (Spoofing is making the message look like it came from someone other than the actual sender.)
      • If you receive an infected message, it did NOT come from any email address on the PPAR Email server. The aggressive filtering of all ppar.com, ppar.org and ppar.net email addresses has resulted in over 9,000 infected messages being deleted so far rather than being delivered to an unsuspecting member.
  • Effective November 29, 2005 the PPMLS Tempo System will initiate the Mandatory Password Change program.
    • Many brokers and agents continue to use the same password long after their administrative staff's employment has terminated.
    • Brokers and agents often employ consultants to help them set up their computers and networks, but then forget to change their passwords after the work is finished.
    • The Mandatory Password Change is a tool to help ensure that only paying participants and their current staff have access to the computer system.
    • Please read important information below and also open the attached document which shows you how to change your password.
      • Passwords will need to be changed every 120 days.
      • Initially, the password changes will be implemented in four (4) groups by Last Name.
        • #1 - November 29 - group A-D
        • #2 - December 6 - group E-K
        • #3 - December 13 - group L-R
        • #4 - December 20 - group S-Z
      • Even if you change your password now, you will still be required to change it again once the Mandatory Password Change program has begun.
      • Effective your Last Name group date, for example November 29, the Tempo system will start sending you a series of daily emails for up to 12 days.  The purpose of the emails is to remind you to change your password.  The email will be sent to your Tempo email address (if you have one), rather than your ppar.net address.
      • If you change your password after your initial start date, but prior to day 12, the system will automatically stop sending the reminder emails.  Thereafter, the system will send out reminders 108 days after your last password change.
      • If, however, you have not changed your password by day 13, then the Tempo system will not allow you to access any other Tempo programs until you have changed your password, closed your browser, and re-entered the Tempo system
      • As an example, suppose my last name is Brown.  On November 29 I receive an email from Tempo that I must change my password.  I continue to access Tempo, and eventually change my password on December 3.   The system will wait another 108 days (approximately March 21) before it sends me a new mandatory password change email message.  However, if I change my password sooner, on February 14,  it will ignore the previously-recorded March 21 date, and instead send my next reminder out on June 2.
      • As another example, suppose my last name is Taylor.  I receive my first Tempo mandatory password change message on December 20.  However, I get busy with the holidays, and despite the emails, I neglect to change my password.  When I return from vacation on January 4 I will be required to change my Tempo password before I can access Quick Search, Hotsheet, or any other Tempo function.

Thank you for your cooperation.  If you have questions please email us at ppmls@ppar.org.
